Brainspotting

Trauma-Informed Healing That Goes Beyond Talk Therapy

You may understand why you feel the way you do—and still feel stuck.
You’ve talked it through. You’ve gained insight. Yet your body continues to hold onto stress, anxiety, or emotional reactions that feel automatic and hard to control.

Brainspotting therapy offers a powerful, neuroscience-based way to access and heal trauma stored deep in the nervous system—without forcing you to relive painful experiences.

At A Road Through, we provide trauma-informed Brainspotting therapy in Sherman Oaks and virtually throughout California for adults who are ready for meaningful, lasting change.

What Is Brainspotting Therapy?

Brainspotting is a therapeutic approach that works by identifying specific eye positions—called brainspots—that correspond with where emotional or traumatic experiences are stored in the brain and body.

Rather than relying primarily on verbal processing, Our brainspotting therapist will help your nervous system do what it already knows how to do: process and release unresolved trauma, stress, and emotional blocks.

This approach is especially effective for people who feel:

  • Emotionally overwhelmed without knowing why

  • Disconnected from their body or emotions

  • Don’t have full memories of the trauma

  • Stuck in cycles of anxiety, burnout, or relational patterns

  • “Highly functional” on the outside but struggling internally

  • Are tired of talking about the trauma and not feeling better

How Brainspotting Works

Brainspotting is grounded in the idea that where you look affects how you feel.

During a session, your brainspotting therapist will help identify an eye position that activates a deeper emotional or somatic response. From there, the brain and body naturally begin processing what has been held beneath conscious awareness.

Sessions are:

  • Gentle and non-invasive

  • Led at your pace

  • Focused on safety and nervous system regulation

  • Often quieter and less cognitively demanding than traditional talk therapy

You are never forced to relive trauma or disclose details you are not ready to share.

  • Childhood trauma and attachment wounds

Many of our clients are high-achieving professionals, creatives, entrepreneurs, and individuals who have learned to “push through” while their bodies remain in survival mode.

Brainspotting vs. Traditional Talk Therapy

While talk therapy can be incredibly valuable, it primarily works through insight and conscious awareness. Brainspotting accesses deeper, subcortical areas of the brain where trauma and emotional memories are stored.

FAQs

  • Brainspotting sessions are often quieter and more internally focused than traditional talk therapy. You may notice physical sensations, emotions, or memories arise naturally as your nervous system processes. Some clients describe feeling deeply calm or emotionally lighter afterward, while others notice gradual shifts over time. There is no “right” experience—your body leads the pace.

  • Both Brainspotting and EMDR are trauma-focused therapies that work with the brain’s natural healing processes, but they differ in structure and approach.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or tapping) and follows a more structured protocol with identified targets. Brainspotting is more open-ended and attuned to the body’s responses, allowing the nervous system to guide the process moment by moment.

Some clients prefer the flexibility and somatic depth of Brainspotting, while others benefit from the structured nature of EMDR. At A Road Through, therapists may integrate both approaches depending on your needs.

  • No. One of the benefits of Brainspotting is that it does not require detailed verbal retelling of traumatic events. You only share what feels safe and necessary. The work happens at a neurological and somatic level, which can be especially helpful if talking about the past feels overwhelming or retraumatizing.

  • The number of sessions varies depending on your goals, history, and the complexity of what you’re working through. Some clients experience meaningful shifts in a few sessions, while others choose to integrate Brainspotting into longer-term therapy. Your therapist will collaborate with you to determine pacing that feels supportive and sustainable.

  • Yes. Brainspotting can be used as your primary therapy, as an adjunct to ongoing therapy (with us or another provider), or in an intensive format with extended or multi-day sessions. Your therapist will help determine the best approach based on your needs and goals.

  • Yes. Brainspotting can be effectively provided through secure telehealth sessions. Many clients find virtual Brainspotting just as impactful as in-person work. We offer online Brainspotting therapy to clients throughout California, in addition to in-office sessions in Sherman Oaks.
